The Zapata reserve is an excellent destination for fishing bonefish, tarpon, snook, cubera snapper, crevalle jack and even barracuda. What makes the area unique are the three principle areas that can be fished: the flats, the rivers and the outer islands and channels. The flats, such as Las Salinas – a fly fishing only location -, where 80% of the fishable water can be waded. Here you can find Macabí, Palometa and Barracuda.
FYI : On the outskirts of Playa Larga is a control point and a chain across the road to enter the shelter of Salinas. Tourists are not allowed to enter the shelter without an official guide.
The Río Hatiguanico and its tributaries, the Gonzalo and the Guareiras, form a superior juvenile tarpon fishery with the average tarpon weigth between 5-25 pounds (but not uncommon are 60-80 pound tarpons). And the so-called Bocas, the outer islands and channels that protect the inner flats of Las Salinas are ideal for tarpon, cubera snapper and snook fishing.
Another fishing area is the Treasure Lagoon, where you can get from Boca de Guama. Located in East Zapata Swamp, its crystal clear waters are famous for their trout population, many of great size, which makes the Lagoon the perfect place for fishing enthusiasts.
